Chamiec Józef Szczepan (1842-1915) - poet. born in Volhynia, Luck district, in the estate of Hraniach. He graduated from high school in Rowne. In 1861 he began studying law at Kiev University. After the outbreak of the 1863 uprising, he traveled to Galicia and enlisted in the party of Wojciech Komorowski, who crossed the border with his unit, After brief skirmishes with Cossacks, Komorowski took Poryck. However, upon hearing that larger enemy forces were approaching, he withdrew behind the cordon to the village of Samowola, where the unit was surrounded by Austrian soldiers. Ch. with many other comrades was imprisoned in Brody and then sentenced to internment in Olomouc. While being transported, he escaped and went into hiding. He later reached Lviv, where he found a kind reception at the home of Kornel Ujejski. After the fall of the uprising, he left for Heidelberg and there, earning his keep with lessons, he supplemented his legal studies. During this period he made the acquaintance of Adam Asnyk, Władysław Olendzki, who was staying there, and M. [p.260]E. Trepka, with whom he remained in cordial relations. In 1865 he traveled to Paris, where he stayed at the home of his aunt, Anna née Hanska Mniszchowa, who facilitated his establishment of relations in the French literary and artistic world. In time, he bought a house in Autevil, married Mrs. Bellaire Lorraine de Miracourt and devoted himself to literary works, which had attracted him from his earliest youth. His works, devoid of outstanding original features, are characterized by a nice and subtle form, and are full of deep lyricism and patriotic feeling. (source: kresy.pl)
