Description:
Catalog of the exhibition of the National Museum in Poznan. Also includes a bibliography.
"The catalog takes into account not only the peculiarities and stylistic evolution of the coffin portrait - in many cases correcting previous views, but also a broad, comprehensively researched historical and cultural context. It includes genealogies of the portrayed persons, territorial localization of persons and images, heraldry, reading, or reconstruction and analysis of epitaph texts accompanying the portraits, to situating the whole problem in the broad spectrum of Baroque funeral customs related to the then manifestation of religiosity and understanding of the meaning of life and death. The catalog is a source-based and representative selection of more than 400 objects from a much larger whole. The essential part, as in the exhibition, is accompanied by funerary objects of the period used in funeral ceremonies, paintings and prints with vanitative themes, as well as representations of occasional designs and realizations of castrum doloris, maps of the former Republic make clear the territorial scope of the type of art in question."
