Franciszek Kowalski (1799-1862) - Polish poet, educator, memoirist, translator. He was educated at the Krzemieniec Lyceum. While still in school, he took up translations of Molière's works. In 1824 he moved to Warsaw, where he made a living as a governess. In 1829 he became a teacher of Polish language and literature at the provincial school in Szczebrzeszyn. During the November Uprising he joined the 16th Infantry Regiment. He transferred to the Lithuanian-Volhynia Legion, immediately after its formation. During the siege of Zamosc he was a second lieutenant, a platoon commander in Capt. Michal Golębiowski's squadron. After the surrender of the fortress, he was held captive in Kamieniec Podolski until September 1832. He moved to Galicia, where he worked as a tutor. In 1849 he became an archivist at the Potocki family's Tulchyn. In 1861 he moved to Cherniatyn near Bar. In 1862 he went to Kiev for a cure.
