History of the former Polish fortress in Zaporizhia (Ukraine, on the right bank of the lower Dnieper River). Built in 1635 by French engineer G. Beauplan to shield Poland's southern borders, it famously mounted a long defense against Khmelnytsky's troops in 1648.
