The action takes place in the years 1587-1607. After the death of Stefan Batory there is another period in Polish history of interregnum, free election and struggle of factions. There is a war for the Polish throne between Sigismund Vasa and Archduke Maximilian. Sigismund becomes king, but an opposition of nobles and magnates forms against the new ruler, led by Jan Zamoyski and, after his death, Mikołaj Zebrzydowski. The dispute ends in a bloody civil war, which went down in history as Zebrzydowski's rokosz.
